Project Win – Burleigh to Palm Beach (B2PB)

McIlwain is proud to announce that we have been awarded the construction contract to upgrade the Pacific Motorway M1 Burleigh to Palm Beach (Package B) as part of our Joint Venture, SMA Infrastructure.

This project is one of three sections of the $1B Varsity Lakes to Tugun upgrade and is expected to commence in late 2020.

Package B will include:

  • widening the M1 to a minimum of 3 lanes in both directions
  • upgrading the Tallebudgera Interchange (Exit 89)
  • constructing six new bridges and widening existing motorway bridges
  • constructing the northern section of a new two-way western service road starting at Tallebudgera (Exit 89) and continuing through to Palm Beach (Exit 92)
  • building a fauna underpass up to 15-metres wide and 55-metres long to connect the Burleigh to Springbrook bioregional wildlife corridor
  • continue the connection of a dedicated active transport path from Varsity Lakes that transitions to active transport paths on the new western service road
  • using smart motorway technologies to help reduce ‘stop-start’ travel on the motorway
  • replacing the existing concrete road surface with stone mastic asphalt for a quieter and smoother road surface
  • preserving a corridor for a potential future rail extension.

Tim McIlwain, General Manager, said the project highlighted the Queensland company’s ability to create community assets.

“The B2PB project is a great opportunity for McIlwain and our joint venture, SMA Infrastructure, to showcase our capability to deliver large and complex transport infrastructure projects. The successful delivery of this contract will put us in a great position to be the contractor of choice in the delivery of Queensland’s infrastructure into the future,” he said.

SMA Infrastructure is a joint venture comprised in equal partnership of Queensland owned and operated businesses SGQ, McIlwain and Albem Operations.
