Bunya Road Bridge is now opened to traffic

It may have been overcast last Friday, but it was all smiles for McIlwain’s project team as the Bunya Road Bridge was officially opened to traffic by Federal Member for Dickson, Hon Peter Dutton MP and Councillor Matt Constance from Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The newly constructed bridge was a key infrastructure project for Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Australian Federal Government as it aims to improve safety and accessibility for motorists, residents and emergency services during severe weather.

This project forms part of the Federal Government’s Bridge Renewal Programme and now replaces the existing one-way, low level crossing that was prone to flooding, cutting residents from Brisbane’s road network. The two-lane bridge features three-spans of prestressed girders, prefabricated steel, 180m3 of cast in situ reinforced concrete deck and asphalt pavement. Approach works included realignment of the existing road, drainage construction, landscaping and revegetation works and construction of fauna passages.

McIlwain’s Construction Manager Craig Southon commented “The team’s endless planning and innovation on this project enabled them to continuously modify safety and environmental controls to adapt to the changing conditions of the South Pine River. To safely work on the rocky creek beds below the constant fluctuating water levels the team used a series of pumps and shoring systems to work safely. Through solid planning, communication and collaboration with the Moreton Bay Regional Council, McIlwain were able to implement road closures and detours to successfully build the project offline from live traffic. Given the constraints and sensitivity of the project location the team overcame all issues to deliver a quality asset for the surrounding community. Congratulations to the team on a job well done”.

McIlwain would like to thank all the residents and motorists for their patience throughout the entire construction phase.
